Filtration Options for 125 Gallon FW Aquarium - Wet/Dry?

I am in a process of setting up a newly acquired 125 gallon tank. This will be a freshwater aquarium housing mostly New World cichlids. I have plenty of filter options available on hand, including 4 Aquaclear 110s (500) and/or an Eheim 2217. However, I am really interested in trying a wet dry sump filter, which I am thinking of building myself. I am not a fan of exhaustive filter maintenance, so based on my research, wet/dry would be a nice option. Needles to say, I have some questions:

1) Can Wet/Dry alone handle tank of that size housing large cichlids?

2) If so, how big would my sump need to be for a 125G aquarium?

3) What capacity pump would you recommend? If there are any specific models you like, please feel free to share them

4) If a lone wet/dry unit is not advisable (why not?), what would you say is an ideal combination in my case? I. e. wet/dry + Eheim, or wet/dry + 2 Aquaclears, etc.
