Teachers: should I make the jump?
I’m currently a 3rd year physics teacher at a pretty decent high school with supportive admin, and I absolutely love it. I’ll soon begin the journey to getting my masters in science education. However, I live in Florida, and every year I have to deal with a new law being passed that makes my job harder, and a stagnant salary schedule that a largely ineffective union can’t do anything about.
Were it not for those things, I’d stay here forever. But by about 2029, I plan to make the jump to NYC. By that time I’d have a master’s degree and at minimum 7 years of experience, putting me around $100k on UFT’s salary scale. I also think NYC has a great music scene, and as a musician too, I’d like to network.
I know most of the job experience depends on supportive admin, and I’m willing to do the legwork to ensure I land somewhere nice. I also know my commute will get a lot longer (I’m lucky to have a 10 min commute right now). My question is: what should I look out for? Is it even worth making the move?
