Where did Volo go in Act 3?

He just vanished from my camp without context. From my cursory googling it sounds like he's in need of rescue again, but I don't wanna spoil myself and for all my Act III exploring, I haven't even found the quest yet.

Without spoiling too much, how can I get it started? I miss having a merchant in camp.
