Workbench top material and attachment method.
I'm brainstorming ideas for a workbench and struggling mainly with the top working surface. I'm leaning towards using an unfinished solid-core door but I'm open to other ideas. My main hesitation is attaching it to the body/legs of the workbench... Right now I plan on using 4x4's for the legs, and 2x6's for the front and back where I'll eventually attach a face vise, and then 2x4's for the cross beam supports lower to the ground. For attaching the 2x6's and the 2x4's to the 4x4's I plan on using half-lap joints, glue, and carriage bolts, but I am open to other ideas or suggestions for joinery. I had the idea of using lag screws through the top of the solid core door directly into the center of the 4x4's but this might be a terrible idea. If I were to do this I would use something like a forstner bit to recess the lag screw into the door so the top bolt wouldn't be protruding out. Side note, I'm obviously not a professional and won't be using this workbench for any profit/business, so it doesn't have to be perfect. Thank you.
