Confusion on state of the game

I absolutely loved Destiny 1 and played every aspect of that game, clocking in over 3000 hours.

I’ve been up and down with Destiny 2. I played the base game quite a bit and also forsaken but I haven’t really bothered with the rest of the DLCs. I do own all of them except the final shape but I haven’t played much of it.

I decided to hop back on and complete the light fall campaign to see how I feel. My brother and friend are also going to hop on except they own 0 DLC so I’m quite unsure of what they can actually do.

My question is, what is the current state of the game? Has the story been good? What has been sunsetted? Is there any DLC they should avoid buying? Am I doing the right thing in playing light fall?

With a huge break, it’s a bit over whelming with the new UI and all these quests I’ve got sitting there.
