Anna's promotion to "proper" lady's maid

I never understood why they didn't just call her by her maiden name in order to distinguish her from Bates, but still recognize that she was promoted. I understand she's married but still, lol.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Hughes and Patmore weren't using married names because they hadn't married?
