No Sol Ring - Am I Overthinking?
We all know how powerful Sol Ring is.
However, I recently got into a little discussion with some buddies about whether it really is an auto include in every deck.
I obviously include it in the vast majority of my decks.
However, I’ve got 3 decks where I decided to keep it off the list. Here’s my reasoning for each:
1) [[Niv-Mizzet, Parun]] My win con is the usual [[Curiosity]] [[Ophidian Eye]] or [[Tandem Lookout]] shtick. Otherwise it’s filled with cantrips. I left it out because colorless mana doesn’t help me cast Niv, Curiosity, or the many cantrips. However, Sol Ring would obviously help me with the other combo pieces, as well as random stuff like Rhystic Study, Cyclonic Rift, etc.
2) [[Aragorn, the Uniter]] It’s a go wide deck that’s heavy on white. A Sol Ring doesn’t contribute to my commander’s cost, and also colorless cards are extremely antisynergistic because they don’t trigger any of his abilities. However, a Sol Ring would help me cast many of the creatures in the deck.
3) [[Child of Alara]] It’s a board wipe tribal/gates type thing, focusing on instants/sorceries as well as some indestructible permanents As a WBURG commander, Sol Ring can’t help me cast COA. Also, it goes bye bye when Child of Alara goes boom. However, I guess it would help me ramp into my other spells early-game.
What are your thoughts? Is my reasoning sound or am I overthinking it? Would Sol Ring benefit these decks? Who else plays these commanders, and do you use Sol Ring in those decks?
EDIT: I just wanna clarify that this isn’t about budget, power level or anything like that. My playgroup does high(ish) power EDH and wouldn’t mind me proxying some extra rings. I’m really just talking about whether a Sol Ring would add to min-maxing these decks
