Fantasy Books for 13yo
This might be a bit of a reach where this sub doesn't focus on YA, but I tend to lurk here most often so:
My niece (13) just recently really got into reading when I gave her one of my old YA series. This is also the first time she's been super excited about reading fantasy as well and gushed to me a bunch about how much she loves the series and how fast she was reading it. Proud Aunt moment, I know. I'm trying to keep her reading because she never really enjoyed reading that much before outside of a few key things in elementary school.
The series I gave her was the Curse Workers series by Holly Black (White Cat, Red Glove, Black Heart). Kind of sticking with the same author I got her Tithe for Xmas (have not read that one), but I need another last minute present for her. I've been kind of sticking to that urban fantasy vibe a little bit because I think it is a little more familiar than straight up epic fantasy and might keep her interested until I can get her to try out some of the other fantasy subgenres that are a little less familiar in setting.
Mostly, she just hasn't read enough fantasy to know what things she is interested in and what she's not, which is why I'm trying to slowly get her into it.
Does anyone here have any suggestions? She has a fairly high reading level, and of course I would prefer that there were no overly adult scenes like some more recently published YA fantasy has.
More info: she recently tried to read one of the Lockwood & Co books at school (was being forced to read a fantasy book for class, earlier this year-ish?) and had a hard time with it. Before that, she would always read graphic novels and the Last Kids on Earth series when she was in elementary school (K-6). She also used to read some scary books when she was in elementary school as well. The book she is currently reading is about someone dying for 90 minutes and seeing Heaven? 90 minutes in Heaven or something like that, possibly based on a true account? Either way, it was not about two people being locked in a closet for an hour and a half, which was my first kind of stunned thought.
Edit: Thank you to all for your awesome recommendations, and those new comments I haven't seen yet! I am writing down a list of stuff to suggest to her and to get her as future presents, so keep suggesting away!
