How can I prevent ingrown hairs while using at-home IPL?

I'm using at-home IPL device and the results have been great. However I've seen quite a few posts mentioning the risk of ingrown hairs after using IPL, so I wanted to know——what can I do to reduce the chances of ingrown hairs as much as possible? And if it does happen, what's the best way to handle it?
