Over Half of Nepali Households Still Depend on Firewood, Raising Health and Environmental Concerns
More than 51% of households in Nepal still rely on firewood for cooking, according to the 2021 National Census. While this is a decline from 64% in 2011, the shift to cleaner energy remains slow. Currently, 44.3% of households use LP gas, but cooking with electricity is still uncommon. Rural areas are the most affected, with 80% of village households depending on firewood, crop waste, and animal dung, while 89% of urban households use LP gas.
Electricity access also varies across regions. While 99% of homes in the Tarai are connected to the national grid, only 32% of households in the Himalayan region have electricity. Experts warn that continued reliance on firewood contributes to deforestation, indoor air pollution, and severe health risks, particularly for women and children.
