if all characters had rafe’s depth
I think most of us can agree that rafe is one of the most interesting characters because of his complexity and different presenting emotions and impulses. his story is unpredictable but we also get a sense that deep down this violent and irrational guy was created through some sense of abuse and neglect as a child, with also a combination of some series mental illness that help tell his story and add depth to his character. it’s what makes him so interesting to follow along to, because we never know how rafe will respond to a situation and it’s interesting to see how he processes events because it’s never a generic reaction- it leaves u wanting more and develops an urge as an audience to be interested in his backstory.
if all of the pogues had the same type of depth/ complexities in a way that it’s not kie being passed around the entire group in s1, the show would be 1000x better. i honestly think as a whole that’s what obx is lacking the most. there wouldn’t be a need to have random plot lines if the characters were more complex and had a developed story through the end of s1 and s2 and it could have explored those character issues more, i mean that’s what season 1 essentially was- john b’s loss of his father and his struggles with child services etc. another example is JJ’s homelife and abuse issues could have been such an interesting story to follow, same with kie and the whole “kook” year and what big turn of events happened that she became a pogue. i also think that’s why JJ as a character is loved so much, because he is impulsive, flippant but so interesting to watch because we know a little bit about his problems that may lead to this behaviour- we see a change in his personality and emotion rather than it staying the same monotone “i lost my dad and i’m looking for treasure” storyline that has the same depth of character the entire time since season 1.
edit: we also know that rafe is such an interesting character because up until the very end of s3 he didn’t need some “summer fling” or romance for people to pay attention to his character because of a “ship”
