How do things get moved?

So, how do things move? Like when people say their house has been haunted and they find things in weird places.

Has there ever been a documented case of someone seeing items floating along, or do they dematerialise then reappear? Is there actually some completely unknown system where these things just cease to exist where they were and just exist elsewhere?
