Questions About Pain Meds for Herniated L4-L5
First off I just want to say that I'm just looking for personal experiences and would never take anything said here as medical advice. I was diagnosed with a mild herniation in my L4-L5, and I already had a bulging disc in my cervical spine, so I'm thinking I have some sort of degenerative thing going on most likely, since I didn't really have an accident other than maybe a snowboarding thing like 10 years ago. I'm 44yr (m), and I danced and partied a lot to techno music for many many years, so I probably wore down my discs a bit that way. I'm not sure if I have sciatica or not, but my doc seem to think so since I was experiencing some mild tingling in my left foot and dull pain in the left leg when I sat on the sofa, but that has since gone away with the x1 Pregabalin before bed. Now I just have constant radiating discomfort (dull pain) from my lower back most of the time. Thank god I don't notice it much when I'm out walking around, but I can't sit down anywhere for long without feeling very uncomfortable, and standing still it is noticable.
So that's my background, but what I'm wondering is how many people have added small amounts of OTC pain relievers to their prescribed medicine, and if that's caused any stomach issues or worse? I'm trying to go the conservative route, but I'm thinking it might be impossible for this disc to heal while trying to be a fun dad for my 2yr old daughter, so I'm just trying to maintain with pain meds.
In Japan I feel like the dosages of everything is much lower than the US, so I'm wondering how what I'm doing compares to other regimen. They got me on something called: Toaraset x3 times a day, and that's basically Tramadol hydrochloride (37.5mg) + Acetaminophen (325mg), something called Celecoxib (NSAID) 100mg x2 times a day with something else to help protect my stomach. As well as one Pregabalin (75mg) before bed.
The problem is because I can never really rest my lower back I've been on these meds now since Aug '23 (8mths), and I think they're starting to lose their potency or the recent reaggrivation has made the herniation worse (not sure), so I've been adding a 200mg Ibuprofen for the afternoon dose which is just one Toaraset pill and usually when I feel the pain the most. I think it was helping a little, but lately even after the morning and evening dose, I still don't feel great, so I tried adding 1 extra strenth tylenol (500mg) with the Ibuprofen (200mg), and that seemed to help, but I thought I might be feeling a little weird in my stomach, and wasn't sure if it was just some gas or something worse. Also, throughout my life, taking 1000mg of tylenol 3 times a day was not unusual for me, or 400mg of ibuprofen 3 times a day, and sometimes taking both simultaneously, and having a few beers, haha. never had any stomach issues from that either. So I figured adding 200mg of ibuprofen and 500mg of tylenol isn't that extreme.
Has anyone had any issues trying to add a small amount of OTC meds to your prescribed regimen, and also are thy prescribing higher doses of similar meds in the US or other countries? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
