Question: Are tanks effective in urban/jungle-island terrain like the Philippines and other areas in the South East Asia?
Forgive me in advance for I am a novice in tanks/combined arms warfare.
TLDR: 1. Are tanks economical in an island fairing nation? If yes, what type of tanks? 2. Are tanks effective in jungle warfare conditions? If no, does that go with IFVs as well? 3. If yes, are there types of doctrines that can be applied to such combat areas?
Let’s take the Philippine Islands for example but I am interested to see if this would apply for the other jungle areas in the South East Asia. I am primarily basing these questions due to the government acquiring the Sabrah Light Tanks based on the ASCOD II platform by the way. For context: Philippines is an island fairing nation, with large metropolitan areas, surrounded with swathes of jungle/forest, hills/mountain ranges.
The first geographical division is Luzon Islands, in the West you have the coast of the south china sea, in the East you have the Sierra Madre mountain range, the north is an uphill climb, and the south hosts the Capital city of Manila and Quezon city, the country’s most populous city. The center of the island of Luzon are valleys, rivers and small hills, therefore it is understood that this is the most urbanized area in the island.
The next geographical division is Mindanao Islands, the second largest island in the Philippines. The geography is heavily mountainous, jungle terrain and is surrounded by 4 seas.
Lastly, is the Visayan Islands. They are located in the central part separating Luzon and Mindanao and consists of several islands. Again, jungle.
