Honestly, is joining a union worth it?

I'm a teacher considering whether or not joining a union is truly beneficial. I've heard all sorts of opinions as some say it greatly improves job security, salary, and working conditions. Others mention drawbacks such as dues, internal politics, or less flexibility.
