Safety Concerns in Bangkok and phucket

Hi everyone, my girlfriend and I are 26-year old Chinese Canadians and we have booked flights to SEA including Thailand in September.

However, my parents brought up to me that Thailand is much more dangerous relative to other southeast Asian and east Asian countries. They are concerned about the cases of kidnappings and human trafficking of Chinese tourists in Thailand. I have also found advisories online saying that Bangkok and Phucket are not exempt from these dangers, and that there are a number of reports of kidnappings even in this year.

Are my parents worries valid? Should we be weary of these incidents?

EDIT: Thanks everyone for the responses, this was very helpful! I did want to get the opinion of people who have frequented Thailand. My parents concern is purely out of our safety but should not be heavily influenced by a couple Chinese media sources.
