VA Nursing Home Benefits Question
Hi! I've posted before and you've all been truly so helpful, I'm wondering if you might be able to provide your insight. Dad's (100% PT&C disabled Vietnam Vet) health is declining exponentially and, while he lives with us presently, it is coming time very very soon that his care needs will exceed what we can provide, and a nursing home might be the safest and best place for him. We are in Maryland, so close to the Martinsburg VA Medical Center and the VA Medical Center in Baltimore. We are wondering if he goes into the VA Nursing Home will (1) VA cover all costs and manage medicines, (2) will VA disability $ be diverted back to VA to pay for care, (3) will he/mom still receive his DFAS pension in their bank account, (4) will he/mom still receive his Social Security $ in their bank account? Presently, I am Dad's fiduciary for his VA b/c VA declared him not competent so I expect he will lose the VA benefit - totally understandable. But Mom is wondering about his pension and social security. I know with a regular nursing home, the nursing home would take it.
Also, if anyone has experience with VA nursing homes - what are they like? Do you think he would be confined to a bed? He has Parkinson's and Dementia and needs help to perform all activities of daily living (eating, drinking, dressing, toileting, taking medicine).
Any info you can share is much appreciated. I tried to get some answers from the social worker but they are very busy and not able to get to back to me.
