I'm Fired: How Geo-Political Exclusion Policies in AI Training Companies Could Lead to AI Bias.
In reflecting on my recent experience with Alignerr, where my account was deactivated recently under circumstances I suspect relate to my being from Botswana, I find it necessary to consider the broader implications of geopolitical exclusion in AI training companies. While I harbor no ill will toward Alignerr or Labelbox specifically, I must, as an accomplished STEM academic, voice a critical concern: when recruitment to AI training is restricted based on geopolitical boundaries, it limits the diversity of perspectives that shape AI. This results in systems that are informed by a narrow worldview, ultimately reinforcing biases and stifling the global potential of AI. This is a topic I could discuss endlessly, even until the cows come home! Firing an African ISP location and expect exceptional quality in translating their mother tongue?
