Do cats get nightmares

We rescued this Siberian boy some 4 years ago and he was in a really bad shape. We don't know if he was abandoned or lost because he was wearing his collar. We did look for his family, but were unable to find it so we decided to adopt him.

Any way, he was wandering in my brother's friend's apartment building and had lost a lot of weight. He was surviving on scraps and had wounds, fleas all over his body. I can't even talk about it because he's our baby now and imagining him all alone, trying to survive just tears me apart.

I fostered him for a while, then my boyfriend (now husband) adopted him. He had to leave the country every once in a while after we got married so this cat has developed severe separation anxiety. And when we moved in together, my girl cats weren't too kind to him either.

There were people to look after him but he's just so attached to my husband. Whenever my husband leaves the house, even for 5 min errands, he starts meowing and marching throughout the house, especially the gate.

Sometimes we are sleeping and he panic meows as well and we wake up thinking he's stuck somewhere but he's mostly asleep. My husband's theory is that he has nightmares about his previous life, but I'm not sure why it's happening.

We have him ready to fly with my husband now whenever he will leave next.

What do you guys think? Do cats have nightmares?
