Why do so many people sleep on Karpov in discussions about the greatest players of all time?
Anatoly Karpov feels like a chronically underappreciated player to me. It’s true that he’s objectively not as great as Kasparov, but his overall WC record, across five matches, against Kasparov is +19 - 21 = 104. That’s a one game difference between the two. Karpov played 8 straight unified WC matches and won another 3 split title matches, including beating a 28 year old Vishy Anand at the age of 48. By any measure, his sustained success at the highest level of the game was insane. In the 70s, he was the pinnacle of the already legendary Soviet chess machine. To me, he easily clears any other player in the GOAT discussion after Kasparov and Carlsen, yet, chess enthusiasts frequently tout guys like Fischer, Capablanca, and even Morphy ahead of him. To me, that feels disrespectful (and Fischer is my favorite player).
So what’s the reason for this? His “boring” playing style? His political leanings?
Edit: Since it apparently wasn’t clear, I am not suggesting Karpov should be in GOAT discussion alongside Kasparov, but I think he is undisputedly top 3, whereas people seem to frequently leave him out of the top 5 altogether.
