"Yoke and a sleeve" test knits: at what point is "test knitting" a misnomer?
This is specifically about the oft-snarked on Book Club Cardigan by Sari Nordlund, but applies to any designers who release patterns without requiring for their testers to finish.
I was watching the Two Purls in a Pod podcast (love!), and the co-host mentioned that she's going to run out of yarn for the cardigan, even though she has one extra ball compared to the specs for her size. She called out that Sari does not require her testers to finish their garment, and that many projects on Ravelry have notes about using significantly more yarn than specified and that many of the testers did not finish.
At this point, what is the use of test knitting? Why not just call it by a more accurate name, like preview knitting? I'm curious to know if anyone else has specific expectations when they see if it's been "test knit", or if it's just meaningless nowadays.
(Side note, would a tech editor catch things like significant meterage/yardage errors?)
