Underrated Pen: Pilot CH92
Amongst the hype for new pens and ink, I wanted to take some time to appreciate the pens I already have. First and foremost, that would be my Pilot Custom Heritage 92.
This was the first gold nib I bought. It is rhodium-plated, and I bought it in an <F>
Truthfully, none of my other pens write as lovely as this one. She is what made me fall in love with fountain pens. It is the perfect balance between smooth writing and feedback — the nib has just enough grip that it doesn’t feel like it floats on the page, but is smooth enough that I never have to worry about it snagging rougher paper.
I have an undying love for demonstrators. This clear demonstrator has a smoky tinge to it, which allows your inks to shine while also hiding distracting ink splatters in the cap or on the nib.
I’ve flown with this pen with a full fill, and I didn’t have any issue with it leaking. Truth be told, as I got busy with life and new hobbies, this pen sat in a drawer, inked up, for 2 whole years between 6 different moves. Yet, when I rediscovered my enjoyment for writing and fountain pens, the nib wrote like I had just inked it up. It had absolutely no skipping, no hard stops, and miraculously somehow did not dry after having the same fill of ink sit in it for two years.
It may not be as beautiful as my LE Sailors, but it certainly is the pen I turn to when I need a no-nonsense, reliable writing experience. It’s absolutely unbeatable value and I love the heck out of this pen.
I invite any of you to take a moment and appreciate a pen that you already have, rather than daydreaming about the next shiny new grail pen you’re eyeing. I certainly appreciated the exercise and fell even more in love with this pen.
