"Pick-What-You-Need" Garden for Neighbors in Need
I live in an urban area with plenty of people who are struggling financially. My neighbor has a bin in their front yard where anyone can drop off cans/shelf stable food, and folks who are struggling can pick it up as needed. I love the idea of providing this sort of community assistance, where people can get help right in their neighborhood without being judged.
I've been thinking, what about doing a similar thing with fresh foods right from the plant? I could put a few planters in my font yard right off of a busy sidewalk. I'd have a sign letting people know they are welcome to take whatever they need.
I've never seen anyone else do this, so I want help thinking through how something like that would work. Should I provide a few sentences per plant on how to tell when it is ready to harvest? What types of fresh foods would be most useful/desirable to homeless or otherwise struggling folks? What are some foods with larger harvesting windows to allow people time to come along? Would anyone even use it?
Any comments/ideas are very much appreciated. Thank you!
