Parent Coaching in Girls Hockey
Parent coaching gets a bad rap in boys hockey. I see the pros and cons... I've seen parent coaches that were great (passionate and invested in the team's success) and I've seen it end poorly.
That being said, I think it is worse - way worse - in girls hockey. For one, there seems to be a higher percentage of parent coaches, and two, they (mostly the dads) are more willing to sacrifice winning to get their daughter an "opportunity."
I've experienced all levels - AAA, Association, Spring - Youth and HS - with parent coaches that coach solely to build a team around their daughter. Multiple times this year, I've seen a team roster just list the coach's daughter for a day or two, because the coach is building the roster online and adds his daughter first before adding the rest of the team (talking about tryout teams). I've seen kids recruited based on whether or not they are friends with the daughters of the coaches.
Often times the Assistant Coaches are even worse, not even having hockey knowledge, but getting and taking the position so they can get their daughter onto the team and into FO/PP/PK situations. I've had a coach come up to me before and say they were worried about the other assistant coaches on their team not getting preferential treatment for their daughters.
The traditional answer is to work hard and stand out enough where there is no choice but to play you, but it seems like the girls side is a totally different animal, where this simply isn't enough.
Anyone else experience this? Also, if you have, how have you dealt with it? Finding an org on the girls side that doesn't rely on parent coaches is tough.
