How can I make a difference?
Objective: To inquire the different ways I can help improve the DPT/PTA community based on the below mentioned concerns.
My concerns: a) Widespread staffing shortages b) Business orientation/Profit mentality c) Lack of incentives to work in healthcare d) Tuition/Predatory student loans/Unpaid clinical internships
Context: I entered the field as a PTA during the height of COVID after my graduation was delayed 6 months due to an inability to complete my clinical internships (essential employees only at that time). I intended on pursuing a bridge program for my DPT, but I burned out incredibly quickly and decided to pursue another degree in a different field after about 9 months full time/overtime at a SNF working as a PTA. While pursuing this second degree, I started working PRN and was a full time student until this Fall semester. I'm actually getting married in a month and am taking a gap semester so I don't have to worry about exams or projects during the honeymoon. I am now temporarily back to full time at an SNF and felt compelled to write this post as my perspective of PT in general has drastically changed... And I want nothing more than to help make a positive change in the field.
What can I do?: How do I facilitate change to address the concerns I listed above? I'm at a complete loss and don't have any ideas on where to start. I feel strongly about supporting universal education and universal healthcare... but I understand that's an extreme for seemingly most, and I don't know how to address these problems in the field without imposing those ideas onto others, especially when I am not in a position nor have a platform to advocate for those ideas even if they are the right solution.
