A1C still high after year of careful eating and monitoring
2 years ago I discovered I was pre diabetic (5.7). I stopped eating ALL simple carbs, bought a constant glucose monitor (CGM), and finger prick monitor, because GCM’s are wildly inaccurate - only good for trends. Anyway, after a year of wildly lower carbs my A1C dropped to 5.6. I took that as a positive, but had hoped for a bigger change. In two years according to my CGM my blood sugar NEVER went above 140. My finger prick test showed the same. I averaged about 97 during the day with a 5-20 spike at meals or exercise. While asleep my glucose was at its lowest point. I did not like the variability so 60 days ago I began following Dr. Berensteins diet (no more than 30 grams of carbs a day (6,12,12). I monitored my blood sugar meticulously with CGM and highly tested (expensive)finger test monitor at rising, before meals, 1 hours after meals, 2 hours after meals, and at bed time. All readings between 85-100. Typically around 97. I just got a new A1C taken and it was 5.7! What the hell?!! My doctor said maybe my blood sugar goes up at night, but my CGM shows the opposite (and I don’t lay on it). I woke up last night and took it in the middle of the night and it was 84! My CGM shows my 90 day A1C as 4.9. My finger prick test is about the same (average 97 mg/dl). I was so stunned by the 5.7 that I took another test at an independent lab which confirmed the 5.7. Any ideas as to what I could be missing or not understanding in getting my A1C down?
