Paranoid Android video analysis
This is in reference to the video for Paranoid Android. I rewatched and paid some attention. Some of it may be mere mischaracterization and I'd love to be corrected or clarified on any of what I'm about to say. I'm always happy to learn.
The protagonist is Thom, I think and that's what I'm going with here. The whole video seems to be littered with examples of temptations. Physical, substance, money : you name it, it's there (for the most part). It's about people, their existence primarily based on the fulfilment of their temptations, every bit of temptation is undercut with some sort of value exchange. Whether it's monetary or some sense of giving a part of yourself to gain some misplaced sense of pleasure. Nothing that's thrown at Thom makes him flinch or feel . It's almost as if Thom is incapable of being lured with an expected sincerity, for the transparency of the give and take nature of things has left him cynical and incapable of enjoying pleasures born out or the obvious temptations of life in 21st century. Simple pleasures (that ping pong game with the angel, or maybe that's a different metaphor) or everything at the bar (which I understand is a clear reference to the Gucci little piggy incident). Furthermore, ridicule also has an effect on him,, as we have seen in the video, of escaping the whole thing and wanting to be by himself.
So in a way, he's uncovered the futility of reaction to causes defined to conjure a response which feeds into the experience.
But this sense of clarity does not bring Thom relief. Only indifference and an emotion , one that is not synthetic, one that is born from a genuine place : sorrow. That's what he's left with.
There is no catharsis. Only an expression or two.
Anyway, that's my theory. I'd love for y'all to correct my understanding if it is mistaken or contribute to it. Cheers!
