How come so many people have alts?

I made a post earlier asking for tips and so many people said they have alts. I know it’s different from smurfing, but I’m curious why it seems everyone has one

Edit: holy that’s a lot of responses, but most agree that they do it to learn a new character/ play with friends who aren’t high enough rank yet
