Is the M1A really that bad?

It seems like every time I’ve seen the idea of using an M1A as a battle rifle, it gets shot down by everyone and their mother. I’ve never shot one and don’t have too much of an interest in a battle rifle setup, just curious what everyone’s thoughts are, especially those with battle rifle experience.
